Monarch Mystery

10 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches
It is a mystery that Monarch Butterflies migrate from Canada and the United States all the way to Mexico every year - one generation, one long trip.  Here in Garrett County, we participate in a tagging program and believe it or not, "our" butterflies have made it all the way there, as there is a database that records their numbers. Once there, the butterflies congregate on trees by the trillions, (the vision is breathtaking), they mate and die.  The new butterflies begin the return trip which takes 3 generations!  As you know, these guys don't fly very fast.  Once home, they lay eggs, the eggs become caterpillars that form a crysallis, out comes the new butterfly, and you guessed it, back to Mexico.  For  more information, go online.
